Keratoconus treatment in Tunisia
Keratoconus is a disease characterized by the progressive weakness and distortion of the cornea which becomes conical form rather than spherical causing blurred distance vision.
Intra-corneal rings, cross linking and corneal transplant are procedures that allow the optical correction of keratoconus. Your eye sergeon recommends the best technique that best suits your eyes.
Intra-corneal rings or “Intacs”
Intra-corneal rings consist of small rigid semi-circular plastic segments surgically introduced into the thickness of the cornea to strengthen, correct the curvature and therefore refraction. Well placed, the corneal astigmatism finds itself reduced.
Clinical research shows that intra-corneal rings are capable of blocking the deformation of the cornea, to reduce astigmatism associated with this disease, and therefore to correct visual acuity of patients.
Keratoconus Treatment via Cross linking
The cross linking is a new technique in the treatment of keratoconus which consists in putting a photosensitive material over the cornea of Riboflavin, and applying ultraviolet rays during long minutes. The aim is to make the rigid collagen through the creation of chemical bridges between the collagen fibrils with phototherapy and polymerizing action (principle of Cross Linking). The goal is to curb the disease or stabilize it.
Keratoconus Treatment by Corneal transplant
The idea is to graft healthy cornea from a deceased donor on the central portion of the diseased cornea. All the sampling process, storage and issuance of estbien codified grafts. The operation of corneal transplant surgery is well controlled by our ophthalmic surgeon. Corneal transplants are now the 1/3 solutions to keratoconus. They are registered on the waiting list for a cornea transplant, patients whose optical acuity is not sufficient with rigid lenses or whose disease is not improved with intra-corneal rings or cross linking.
